Chapter Fourteen

Annie’s cheeks burned. She clasped the rope in her hands and remained ahead of Chad. There was no forgetting that kiss. She knew it and Chad knew it. The fact of the matter remained: Chad was her boss, and he only saw her as an employee. They were caught up in the moment, that was all.

Oh, but that kiss! Her insides still felt like they were on fire, and her lips wouldn’t stop tingling. She lifted her fingers to touch them, reliving the moment his had captured hers.

She released a shuddering breath. She needed to forget it. Forget all of it and be the professional she was meant to be. Bolt shook his neck as if he disagreed with her thoughts. “You don’t know anything.” He nickered and bobbed his head.

The ride took longer than she wanted it to. When Bolt plodded into the clearing, she jumped off the horse and jogged inside. Her clothes still stuck to her and she needed a moment alone to gather her thoughts. To face Chad again so soon would be harder than she wanted to admit.

Annie sped by the kitchen, hoping to avoid seeing anyone. “Miss Shipley.”

Her heart rate increased and her palms grew damp. Wasn’t he associated with the legal part of the business? She hadn’t done anything wrong, had she? She didn’t want to be fired.

Carter glanced up at her, gesturing with his chin to a chair nearby. “I won’t bite.”

She inched inside the room, her hands behind her back. “I better not sit, I’m still a little wet.”

He steepled his fingers in front of his lips. “Ah. You’re probably right.”

“Is there something you needed?”

Carter nodded. “Bolton Farms doesn’t have a rule against interoffice relationships.”

Oh brother, he was concerned about their relationship.

“Sir, you don’t have to—”

He held up his hand. “As I was saying, there is no official policy against relationships, but where Mr. Bolton is the CEO, you can understand my concerns. If you are interested in starting a relationship with Mr. Bolton, you will need to sign a few things. First, the official declaration with HR, but also this.” He reached into a briefcase beside his chair and handed her a paper.

She skimmed the paper and her stomach clenched. Taking the pages into her hands, she crumpled them into a tight wad and tossed it at him. “You have no idea what you’re talking about. Chad and I are not together. I know better than to date my boss, and I don’t need some kind of pre-dating contract that says I won’t go after his money. I’m not a
